Visitability Awareness Month Proclamation and Open House May 14

Imagine if you or a loved-one used a wheelchair. Imagine trying to visit a friend’s house and finding that every entrance has stairs to or from the doorway, and that the entryway is too narrow to navigate using the wheelchair. “Visitable” homes aim to solve these problems.

ARISE is partnering with Syracuse Habitat for Humanity and the Fair Housing Council of Central New York to raise awareness about the importance of visitable housing and inclusive home design. Representatives from Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse will proclaim May as Visitability Awareness Month Proclamation event on May 14 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the visitable home at 227 Elliot Street in Syracuse. The house will be open to the public for tours of the newly constructed home to see the visitable features.

Visitable homes have at least one no-step entrance to a door at least 36 inches wide and a bathroom on the first floor that can accommodate a person who uses a wheelchair. This inclusive home design, when planned for before construction, adds no significant costs to the home. The modifications also support aging in place, so you and your loved ones can grow old in your own home.

Visitable homes are homes for a lifetime.  We hope you will join us on May 14 to learn about how you can make your home accessible to friends and loved ones of all abilities.
