The 2010 Census is in Our Hands

Every 10 years, the United States Government is required to count the number of people living in America. The Census Bureau oversees this, and will be mailing out a document to every household in the country around the middle of March this year. ARISE is committed to ensuring that people of all abilities are included in the 2010 Census.

The Census determines many things, including voting districts and the amounts of funding from the Federal government that areas receive. It takes about 10 minutes per person in each household to answer the questions, and the questionnaire will come with a postage-paid envelope addressed to the U.S. Census Bureau, which makes it easy to return.

The U.S. Census Bureau is now sending census takers to homes where the residents have not returned their 2010 Census form. A census taker is a person from your community who is hired by the Census Bureau to make sure that your neighborhood gets represented as accurately as possible. The census taker's primary responsibility is to collect census information from residences.

  • The Census Bureau provides the census taker with a binder containing all of the addresses that didn't send back a filled out census form.
  • The census taker then visits all of those addresses and records the answers to the questions on the form.
  • If no one answers at a particular residence, a census taker will visit a home up to three times and attempt to reach the household by phone three times. The census worker will leave a double-sided (English and Spanish) NOTICE of VISIT in the doorway that includes a phone number for the resident to schedule an appointment.

The census taker will ONLY ask the questions that appear on the census form. You can also visit the Census Bureau Website to see a sample of the 2010 census or for more information.

Please remember that it is extremely important that every household is counted. It's in Our Hands!
