 Grant Focuses on Women's Health

Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central New YorkARISE would like to announce its newest program “Breast Health Awareness and Outreach for Women with Disabilities” supported by a grant from the Central New York Affiliate Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  This is the 15th year that the Central New York Affiliate has awarded community grants in the 17 counties they serve, bringing the total granted to $3.5 million.

In keeping with ARISE’s mission we are collaborating with the Central New York Affiliate Susan G. Komen for the Cure to increase breast health awareness and education for women with disabilities, recognizing this is an essential part of the health interests of any individual.

Research shows that women with disabilities are at a greater risk for undetected breast cancer at an early stage.  Obtaining a screening exam for early detection of breast cancer can be a significant challenge for many women with disabilities in part because of inaccessibility of the medical equipment, lack of transportation, or the lack of education focused on women with disabilities.

ARISE’s Breast Health Awareness and Outreach will provide education sessions and an intensive outreach program across a three-county area. Our goals are to increase the number of women with disabilities over the age of 35 who receive annual mammograms and to increase the number of women who perform regular monthly breast self-examinations.

ARISE’s Educational Sessions will be provided in a small group setting for women with disabilities and area service providers.  ARISE will also provide Community Outreach at Community Fairs, Health Education Forums, Community Centers and include services at ARISE in Oswego, Fulton, and Pulaski.  This widespread opportunity will be advantageous to reaching the rural communities.
