Camp Counselor – Activity Leader, Grade 2

Reports to:           Camp Director

FLSA Status:          Non-exempt, seasonal

Job Summary:  The Camp Activity Leader (CAL) will prepare, plan and implement intentional daily activities for camp group rotations. Common activities will often include field games, large group activities, cheers, scavenger hunts, creative and exploratory programs with a focus to incorporate camper goals and promote positive socialization. While not planning and leading activities the CAL works with and supports camp participants and staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Communicate with campers, coworkers, management and visitors with dignity and respect
  • Ensure the safety of campers throughout the day by remaining aware and alert to the camp environment, weather conditions, dynamics of participants and coworkers as trained
  • Ride the bus, as needed, to actively supervise campers and maintain their health and safety during the bus ride from the main ARISE office in Syracuse to either the Farm in Chittenango or Freedom Recreation in Auburn, and return trip
  • Assist in providing personal care to campers per training; personal care may include but is not limited to: changing of clothing, feeding, hand washing, toileting, lifts and transfers and other hygiene needs
  • Expediently report any injuries, illnesses, incidents or bites to the Camp Director/Health Director
  • Maintain line of sight with assigned campers continuously
  • Follow campers’ safeguards and ask questions if clarity is needed
  • Facilitate games and activities during the camp day as directed
  • Assist campers with: activities, eating, drinking, washing hands and other supports as needed
  • Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the camp area
  • Report any safety issues or concerns to the Camp Director immediately
  • Apply first aid as needed per Red Cross training until the Health Director and/or other trained personnel arrive on the scene
  • Report any incidents of abuse, maltreatment or neglect to the Camp Director, and follow procedures as trained (mandated reporter protocols per NY Justice Center)
  • Uphold the Codes of Conduct and ethics as well as all ARISE policies and procedures
  • Exercise sound judgment as a matter of course, and hold protected health information and other sensitive information in the strictest of confidence in accordance with ARISE and HIPAA policies
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Must complete background checks as required, including OPWDD/Justice Center fingerprinting, child abuse and sex offender registries
  • Completion of all required trainings and refreshers
  • Able to monitor the activities of campers who have varying abilities and disabilities
  • Meet the physical demands (walking, running, bending, lifting, and assisting campers with meals, washing hands, toileting, exerting 50 pounds of force to assist with lifts, transfers and other hygiene needs
  • Proof of immunizations per NYS DOH strongly preferred (2 Measles, Mumps, Rubella doses; 1 Tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis vaccine booster dose within last 10 years; and 2 varicella vaccine doses)
